Alanya Castle
Alanya Castle
Introduction
Built on a unique hill with a bird’s-eye view of the city, Alanya Castle carries the traces of many civilizations throughout history. Reflecting both the Seljuk and Ottoman periods, the castle is today one of the city’s most important landmarks. Located very close to the city center, it offers not only history but also a breathtaking panorama.
History and Significance
Alanya Castle was rebuilt in the 13th century by Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat. Today, its walls, towers, and inner structures stand as significant remains that bear witness to the city’s past. Later, during the Ottoman Empire, the castle continued to play a central role in Alanya’s defense. The earliest structures, first built by the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century, were expanded significantly during the Seljuk era.
