Amasra Museum
Amasra Museum

Whatever the stones of this two-harbored city hold, it is quietly told within these walls…
Overlooking the sea, the Amasra Museum is a small yet versatile museum that carries traces from Ancient Rome to Byzantium, and from the Seljuks to the Ottomans. Across its four halls, visitors can explore sarcophagi, sculpted heads, terracotta objects, glass ornaments, coins, jewelry, and examples of traditional crafts — reflecting the cultural richness of the region. In its garden, remarkable stone artifacts are displayed, where history meets the tranquil view of the Black Sea.
The museum building was originally constructed in 1884 as a maritime school and was opened as an archaeology museum in 1975. In addition to artifacts unearthed in Amasra and its surroundings, the collection includes ethnographic items contributed by local residents. The pieces span from the Hellenistic to the Ottoman periods, shedding light on the history of Bartın and the Western Black Sea region.
Viofun’s Recommendation:
Wander among the sarcophagi and stone relics in the museum’s garden, then sit on a seaside bench and take in both the view and the past. After your visit, a short walk will take you to Amasra Castle — the perfect way to complete your historical journey with the breeze of the Black Sea.
