Aphrodisias Archaeological Site and Museum

In this city dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite, the stones do not merely stand — they speak, they feel, they enchant…
The Aphrodisias Archaeological Site, with its monumental architecture, magnificent stadium, theater, agora spaces, and especially its marble sculptures, is one of the most captivating artistic cities of the ancient world. Right next to the site lies the Aphrodisias Museum, which presents original sculptures, reliefs, and sarcophagi unearthed during excavations in an impressive and refined display. The museum halls seem to reconstruct the aesthetic ideals of the Roman era.
Named after Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodisias became a sacred center from the 2nd century BC onward. Supported by Roman emperors, the city gained fame for its exquisite marble craftsmanship. It is also home to one of the largest stadiums of the ancient world. Excavations began in the 1960s under the leadership of the renowned archaeologist Kenan Erim. In 2017, Aphrodisias was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Viofun’s Recommendation:
Spend some time in front of the Sebasteion reliefs in the museum and look closely at the expressions on the figures’ faces. Then climb to the top row of the stadium and gaze silently at the vastness. In Aphrodisias, art is not only seen — it is deeply felt. End your visit by exploring the nearby ancient marble quarries for a truly unique cultural experience.
