Arykanda Archaeological Site
Arykanda Archaeological Site

Imagine an ancient city where every structure faces the sun… Arykanda is one of the most elegant cities of Lycia. With its hillside theater, agora terraces, baths, and necropolis areas, it offers visitors layer upon layer of history. Walking along the paths accompanied by mountains and pine trees, you witness the flawless balance between nature and architecture. Compared to other archaeological sites, this one is quieter – almost an open-air sanctuary for those who wish to encounter the past in silence.
Arykanda’s history dates back to the 5th century BC. Its name in the Lycian language means “the place beside the high rock.” The city flourished during the Roman period, noted for its theater, stadium, and bath complex. The buildings were constructed on steep slopes, perfectly adapting to the natural topography. Mosaics and inscriptions unearthed in excavations provide important clues about the city’s social life.
Viofun’s Recommendation
Climb to the very top row of the theater and look back over the valley. The view will be breathtaking, and the silence enchanting. While exploring Arykanda, you’ll feel as if you’re inside a time machine—but don’t rush; to truly understand this city, you need to walk slowly.
