Asklepion of Pergamon (Izmir-Bergama)
Asklepion of Pergamon (Izmir-Bergama)

In ancient times, this was the “hope of those seeking healing”… The Asklepion of Pergamon is located in Bergama, İzmir, and is one of the most important medical centers of the ancient world, named after the god of health, Asclepius. With its colonnaded streets, sacred water sources, treatment rooms, theater, and healing tunnel, it reflects the advanced architectural and medical understanding of its era.
Founded in the 4th century BC, the Asklepion became a health complex during the Roman period. Patients were treated here with music, theater, mud baths, dream interpretation, and water therapies. Galen, one of the pioneers of medical history, received his training at this center. Today, structures such as the Sacred Way, the healing tunnel, the colonnaded courtyard, altars, and a small Roman theater can still be seen.
Viofun’s Suggestion
As you walk through the tunnel, let your voice echo, close your eyes, and imagine: thousands of years ago, people passing through here sought not only physical but also spiritual healing. You may also end your historical journey by climbing up to Pergamon Castle.
