Büyükada: Istanbul’s Peaceful Escape
For those who want to get away from Istanbul’s chaos and spend time surrounded by nature in a historically rich atmosphere, Büyükada is the perfect destination! The largest of the Princes’ Islands, Büyükada enchants visitors with its seaside mansions, pine-lined roads, and cycling routes. At Viofun, we highly recommend Büyükada to both nature and history enthusiasts.
History and Atmosphere
An important settlement since Byzantine and Ottoman times, Büyükada became a summer retreat for Istanbul’s wealthy families in the 19th century. The grand mansions built during this period add nostalgic charm to the island today. The Greek Orthodox monasteries and the world-famous Büyükada Greek Orphanage, one of the largest wooden structures in Europe, highlight its historical importance. With motor vehicles banned, the island offers a calm, timeless atmosphere.
