Çankırı Museum
Çankırı Museum

Can an elephant’s jawbone tell a story that’s millions of years old?
At the Çankırı Museum, it certainly can!
This unique museum brings together the city’s natural history and cultural heritage under one roof.
It is particularly famous for the elephant, giraffe, rhinoceros, and hyena fossils discovered at the Çorakyerler fossil site.
In the archaeology and ethnography galleries, you can explore coins, jewelry, weapons, and everyday objects from the Hittite, Roman, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods.
Opened in 1972 and relocated to its newly restored historic government building in 2017, the museum houses one of Turkey’s richest vertebrate fossil collections.
It also reflects the region’s multi-layered history, from the earliest traces of settlement to the modern day.
The interactive exhibits and life-size reconstructions make it especially engaging for young visitors.
Viofun’s Recommendation
Stand in front of the massive elephant jawbone in the fossil hall and read the nearby information panel carefully.
Then continue to the ethnography section to complete your journey through time.
Before you leave, don’t forget to check out Çankırı’s famous salt lamps — a perfect souvenir from your visit.
