Dark Church in Göreme, Nevşehir

Frescoes where time itself seems to have stopped…
The Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise) is located in Göreme, within the Göreme Open-Air Museum in Nevşehir.
It takes its name from the limited natural light that enters the space — a feature that has helped preserve its frescoes in exceptional condition.
Used historically for seclusion, worship, and education, this rock-carved sanctuary stands as one of Anatolia’s finest examples of Byzantine art.
Built in the 11th century as part of Cappadocia’s monastic tradition,
the church features a cross-vaulted ceiling, columns, and three apses, reflecting the classic Cappadocian church design.
Its interior walls depict biblical scenes such as the Nativity, miracles of Christ, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection.
Thanks to its darkness, the colors of the frescoes remain almost as vivid as the day they were painted.
It is now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Viofun’s Recommendation
As you bend through the small doorway, look up —
the colors, figures, and the quiet absence of light will take you on a journey through time.
We suggest visiting the Dark Church at the end of your Göreme Museum tour to feel its full emotional impact.
