Derinkuyu Underground City
Derinkuyu Underground City

A world eight stories deep underground…
Located in the Derinkuyu district of Nevşehir, the Derinkuyu Underground City is one of the largest and deepest subterranean settlements in Cappadocia.
With its living spaces, ventilation shafts, stables, kitchens, churches, cemeteries, and even schools, the complex was designed so that thousands of people could live underground for extended periods.
Carved into the rock, this hidden city served throughout history as a place of refuge and defense.
Derinkuyu dates back to the 8th century BC.
It is believed to have been first excavated during the Phrygian period and later expanded in Byzantine times.
It was actively used by Christians seeking refuge from Arab invasions.
The entire complex extends to a depth of 85 meters, though only about 10% is open to visitors.
Its entrances were designed to be sealed with massive stone doors.
Viofun’s Recommendation
Visit in the early morning hours; although naturally cool inside, the narrow tunnels can be crowded later in the day.
