Erzurum Castle
Erzurum Castle

In the very heart of the city, a silent guardian continues to watch over time…
Erzurum Castle, with its elevated position offering a bird’s-eye view of the city and its historical aura, stands as both a strategic and symbolic structure.
Its inner fortress, watchtowers, and walls remain standing, offering visitors not only panoramic views but also a deep sense of ancient history.
The Tepsi Minaret (Clock Tower) located within the castle has become one of Erzurum’s defining landmarks.
The history of the castle dates back to the Urartians, but its current form took shape during the Byzantine Empire in the 5th century and was later expanded and fortified during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods.
The inner and outer fortifications served as the city’s main defense for centuries while also functioning as administrative and religious centers.
The area where the Clock Tower now stands once served as a small mosque.
Climb up to the castle towers to view Erzurum from above.
At sunrise or sunset, photographs taken from this spot perfectly capture the harmony between history and landscape.
After your visit, take a short walk to the Yakutiye Madrasa and Ulu Mosque to complete your historical route through the old city.
