Galata Mevlevihanesi Museum
Galata Mevlevihanesi Museum

When the whirling begins, time stands still…
The Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum, located in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district, was one of the most important Mevlevi lodges of the Ottoman era.
Today, as a museum, this unique structure serves as a remarkable stop for those wishing to explore Mevlevi culture and Istanbul’s spiritual heritage.
With its courtyard, semahane (ritual hall), tombstones, and dervish cells, it offers a mystical atmosphere filled with traces of the past.
The Mevlevihane was founded in 1491 by İskender Pasha and is recognized as Istanbul’s first Mevlevi lodge.
After the closure of dervish lodges in 1925, it ceased its activities and was reopened as a museum in 1975.
The complex includes the semahane, tombs, dervish cells, a fountain, and a cemetery.
The museum exhibits ney flutes, kudüm drums, dervish garments, calligraphy panels, and original documents representing Mevlevi culture.
Viofun’s Recommendation
When you step into the semahane, look upward.
The elegance of the wooden ceiling combined with the silence of the hall will make you feel that this is not just a building—it’s a sanctuary for the soul.
If you plan your visit on a weekend, you may catch one of the Sema ceremonies held at the museum and deepen your experience.
