Giresun Museum
Giresun Museum

Once prayers rose from these walls – now history speaks...
Giresun Museum is a unique institution that unites archaeology and ethnography within the historic Gogora (St. Nicholas) Church, dating back to the 18th century.
Its stone structure, arched windows, and high apse alone create a captivating atmosphere, while inside, artifacts from the Paleolithic Age to the Ottoman period are exhibited.
Built as a church in the 1700s, the building was used as a prison for a time during the Republican era, then restored and converted into a museum in 1988.
The museum’s collection includes stone tools, pottery, coins, glassware, and Byzantine artifacts unearthed from excavations in Giresun and its surroundings.
An ethnographic section also showcases the Black Sea culture with traditional clothing, textiles, weapons, and handcrafted items.
Viofun’s Recommendation
Take a short pause in front of the tombstones and inscriptions in the museum courtyard.
These stones carry not just names, but forgotten stories.
After your visit, climb up to Giresun Castle to complete your journey through history while enjoying a panoramic view of the city.
