Heaven and Hell Archaeological Site, Silifke – Mersin

Two giant natural wonders named after both their appearance and mythology…
The Cennet (Heaven) and Cehennem (Hell) Sinkholes are located in Narlıkuyu, a neighborhood of Silifke district in Mersin.
With their depth and mysterious atmosphere, these collapses have been important sites of faith and nature tourism since ancient times.
The church ruins, stairways, and mythological legends surrounding the area make it not just a natural formation but a stage of ancient myths.
Formed by underground waters dissolving limestone over thousands of years, the Cennet sinkhole can be descended via 452 steps, leading to a Church of the Virgin Mary built in the 5th century AD.
The Cehennem sinkhole, much deeper and with vertical walls, cannot be entered; it can only be viewed from the observation terrace above.
Ancient writers mention the legend that Zeus imprisoned the monster Typhon within this pit.
Viofun’s Recommendation
If you plan to descend into the Cennet sinkhole, wear comfortable shoes and remember that going back up the stairs is part of the journey.
Watching the sunset from the terrace offers an unforgettable experience where you can truly feel the harmony of myth and nature.
