İshak Pasha Palace
İshak Pasha Palace
Perched against the rugged cliffs of Doğubayazıt and resembling an eagle’s nest, this magnificent structure brings together history and aesthetics amid the silent mountains of Ağrı. The İshak Pasha Palace is more than just stone walls; with its sections including a palace, mosque, mausoleum, harem, and dungeon, it is like a city in itself. Every corner is adorned with finely carved motifs, voicing all that remains unsaid about Anatolian palace architecture. As the rising sun illuminates its stone walls, every visitor feels, “I’m glad I came.”
Historical Information
Construction of the palace began in 1685 under Çolak Abdi Pasha and was completed by his son, İshak Pasha. The structure combines elements of Ottoman, Seljuk, and Persian architecture. Completed in the 18th century, it is one of the most important palace complexes in Anatolia. With its advanced heating system and window design, the İshak Pasha Palace is considered the pinnacle of Ottoman stone craftsmanship.
Viofun’s Recommendation
From the palace terrace, as you look over the Doğubayazıt Plain, you’ll hear not only the wind but also whispers of history. We recommend that after your palace visit, you take a walk down toward the plain. Explore the local handicrafts sold at small stalls set up by villagers, and then take a break with warm tandır bread fresh from a stone oven, accompanied by ayran. And since you’ve come this far, don’t forget to add the old caravanserais in Doğubayazıt’s town center to your itinerary.
