Izmir Agora Archaeological Site
Izmir Agora Archaeological Site

Every step taken in the heart of ancient Smyrna echoes a story thousands of years old… The Izmir Agora Archaeological Site, located in the Namazgâh quarter of Konak, is a large public area from the Roman period. Along these stone streets, where merchants, officials, citizens, and philosophers once gathered, you can still see colonnaded galleries, vaulted substructures, shop traces, and water channels. You are truly in the center of history within the city.
The Agora was rebuilt in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, following a major earthquake. As the center of public life, it hosted both trade and administrative activities. The basilica, the agora courtyard, rows of columns, and inscriptions—remarkable examples of Roman urban architecture—provide valuable insights into the civic life of Smyrna. Excavations and restorations are still ongoing today.
Viofun’s Suggestion
As you wander among the silent stones of the Agora, pause for a moment and close your eyes. The bustle of the marketplace, the footsteps of state officials, and the echoing words of philosophers may still linger here. After your visit, you can take a short walk to the Kemeraltı Bazaar and complete this experience where ancient and modern Izmir blend together.
