İzmir Çeşme Museum
İzmir Çeşme Museum
A castle by the sea, and within its walls a silence filled with history… The Çeşme Museum, located in the Çeşme district of İzmir, is housed inside the 16th-century Ottoman Çeşme Castle, adapted as a museum. Hosting both archaeological and ethnographic collections, it presents a bridge of time spanning from antiquity to the Ottoman era. Here, the blue of the Aegean stands side by side with the stone walls of history.
The museum was opened in 1965 inside Çeşme Castle. Its collection includes ceramics, figurines, glass objects, and ancient inscriptions unearthed in excavations at Ildırı (Erythrai), Alaçatı, and the surrounding areas. It also displays information panels about the 1770 Battle of Çeşme, Ottoman-era maps, and maritime artifacts. The panoramic position within the castle provides not only historical but also visual experiences.
Viofun’s Suggestion
When you climb the castle walls, you will be gazing not only into history but also into the endless blue of the Aegean Sea. After your visit, you can take a short walk to Çeşme harbor to end your day by the sea or relax in the hidden cafés at the foot of the castle.
