Kaymaklı Underground City, Nevşehir
Kaymaklı Underground City, Nevşehir

Behind these stone walls lies a life that endured for centuries…
The Kaymaklı Underground City, located in the town of Kaymaklı in Nevşehir, is one of the largest and widest subterranean cities in Cappadocia.
Four levels are open to visitors, featuring living spaces, kitchens, wineries, animal stables, and ventilation shafts, forming a fully functional underground settlement.
Dating back to the 8th century BC, the city was actively used during the Byzantine period as a refuge from Arab invasions.
Connections between floors were made through narrow tunnels, and circular stone doors provided protection during attacks.
Kaymaklı’s most remarkable feature is its ingeniously designed food storage and ventilation systems.
Although only part of the site is open today, the entire complex extends over eight levels and dozens of meters underground.
Viofun’s Recommendation
As you bend through the low entrance tunnel, pay attention to the astonishingly organized underground layout that unfolds around you.
Since the tunnels can become crowded later in the day, we recommend visiting in the morning hours for a more comfortable experience.
