Laodicea Archaeological Site

The theaters that once echoed with gladiator fights now resonate with birdsong…
The Laodikeia Archaeological Site, located north of Denizli, was one of the most important trade, health, and faith centers of ancient Phrygia.
With its wide colonnaded streets, stadium, theaters, temples, and early Christian churches, it bears the marks of many civilizations throughout history.
Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, the site remains a living archaeological center with ongoing excavations and restorations.
Laodikeia was founded in the 3rd century BC by Seleucid King Antiochus II in honor of his wife Laodice.
During the Roman period, the city reached great prosperity and became famous for its textile products and medical schools.
It was also home to one of the Seven Churches of Revelation mentioned in the Bible.
Since 2010, extensive excavations have brought much of the city to light, and key structures such as the colonnaded street, nymphaeum (monumental fountain), and monumental church have been restored.
Sit on the top rows of the western theater and gaze over the plain.
Imagine who might have admired the same view thousands of years ago…
After your visit, you can head to nearby Hierapolis and explore these two magnificent cities in a single day.
