Museum of Anatolian Civilizations
Museum of Anatolian Civilizations
Are you ready to come face to face with a golden Hittite mask? The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations greets you not only with archaeological artifacts but also with a unique atmosphere that draws you in. From stone tools to deity figurines, inscriptions to royal seals, its collection presents the history of Anatolia step by step – from the Paleolithic era to Roman times. Housed in two restored Ottoman buildings, the museum impresses as much with its setting as with its heritage.
Historical Information
The museum’s origins date back to 1921 with the initiative of Atatürk. The building took its current form in 1968 and was awarded “European Museum of the Year” in 1997. Artifacts from excavations at sites such as Çatalhöyük, Hattuşa, Alacahöyük, and Gordion make it special worldwide. Its collections from the Hittite and Phrygian periods are particularly noteworthy.
Viofun’s Recommendation
After touring the museum, walk toward Ankara Castle. The stone-paved streets and the historic atmosphere of Hamamönü will turn your museum visit into a meaningful discovery.
