Myra Archaeological Site
Myra Archaeological Site

Rock-cut tombs carved into high cliffs rise as if wishing to be buried in the sky. Myra is not just an ancient city but an open-air theater that still carries the spirit of the Lycian civilization. Its massive stage building, stone seating rows, and the tombs rising just behind create a striking contrast. With every step, you come face to face with traces of the past and listen to the stories told by the stones.
Myra was one of the most important cities of the Lycian League. Dating back to the 5th century BC, it was both a powerful religious and political center. Its ancient theater is among the largest in Anatolia. The rock-cut tombs reflect the belief in immortality, like a wish carved into stone. Moreover, as the city where Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) served as bishop, Myra holds a special spiritual significance.
Viofun’s Recommendation
Climb to the top row of the theater in Myra and look toward the rock tombs. The view carries not only historical value but also spiritual depth. After your visit, take a short walk to Demre center and add the Church of Saint Nicholas to your route.
