Özkonak Underground City
Özkonak Underground City

A city carved not only to hide, but also to fight…
The Özkonak Underground City, located in the Avanos district of Nevşehir, stands out for its unique defensive systems that distinguish it from other underground cities in Cappadocia.
With its narrow tunnels connecting different levels, stone sliding doors, holes for pouring hot oil on enemies, and communication channels, Özkonak is one of the most strategically designed settlements in the region.
Dating back to around the 4th century BC, the city was first carved by the Phrygians and later expanded during the Roman and Byzantine periods.
Although it is believed to have ten levels, only the first four are open to visitors today.
Its large ventilation shafts, wine cellars, food storages, stables, and living quarters show that it was designed for both short-term refuge and long-term habitation.
The trap systems in its defense tunnels make Özkonak one of Cappadocia’s most fascinating underground fortresses.
Viofun’s Recommendation
Don’t skip the guided tour — in Özkonak, people didn’t just hide; they defended themselves with ingenuity.
Every corridor tells a strategy, every stone tells a story.
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, as some tunnels are quite narrow.
