Republic Museum
Republic Museum
When you step inside, the silence that greets you is in fact the echo of decisions once made. The deputies’ seats are still in place, and the rostrum from which Atatürk delivered his Nutuk remains unchanged. The museum is not only for observation; it exists to let you feel those days, to hear the first breaths of the Republic. The halls have been preserved in their original form, while archival documents, newspapers, draft laws, and wax figures convey the spirit of the era in full.
Historical Information
Built in 1924, this building served as the Grand National Assembly until 1960. Atatürk’s longest and most significant speech, the Nutuk, was delivered in this hall. The transition from single-party rule to multi-party democracy, the granting of women’s rights, the passing of reform laws, and much of the work on the new constitution were carried out here. As one of the earliest architectural symbols of the Republic, it was converted into a museum in 1981, reaching the present without breaking its bond with history.
Viofun’s Recommendation
After visiting the Republic Museum, bring along a copy of Atatürk’s Nutuk and sit on one of the benches just beside the museum. Reading the opening pages while facing that rostrum turns the experience into more than a tour – it becomes the beginning of a historical awareness. It is in your hands to transform an ordinary museum visit into an unforgettable experience.
