Once, gods and emperors walked these stone streets — now, only the wind does…
The ancient city of Sagalassos, located near Ağlasun in Burdur, is the remarkably well-preserved capital of Pisidia. Its theater, agora, baths, library, monumental city gates, and especially the Antonine Fountain make it far more than an open-air museum. As you walk among the ancient stones with a stunning mountain view, history and nature merge into a single frame.
Sagalassos dates back to around 3000 BCE, but its golden age came during the Roman Empire. Declared the “Capital of Pisidia” by Emperor Hadrian, it became one of the most important cities in the region, both architecturally and socially. After a series of earthquakes and plague outbreaks in the 7th century CE, the city was abandoned — which is why its structures remain so incredibly well preserved today. Excavations led by Leuven University (Belgium) continue to reveal new discoveries each year.
Viofun’s Recommendation:
Stand before the Antonine Fountain and watch its water still flowing — the same source from which people drank thousands of years ago. To stand there is to be in the very heart of the past. On your way back, stop by Ağlasun Market to pick up a walnut “sucuk” or Burdur’s famous “testi pekmezi” (grape molasses) — a sweet memory from your historical journey.
