Şanlıurfa Göbeklitepe Archaeological Site

This may be where history itself began…
The Göbeklitepe Archaeological Site, located in the Haliliye district of Şanlıurfa, is recognized as the world’s oldest known monumental temple complex, dating back to 9600 BC.
Its massive T-shaped pillars, adorned with animal reliefs and arranged in circular structures, reveal an organized belief system that predates settled life.
Göbeklitepe is not just an archaeological site — it is a place that reshapes our understanding of human civilization’s beginnings.
Excavations began in 1995, led by Klaus Schmidt.
With a history stretching back 12,000 years, Göbeklitepe predates Stonehenge, the Egyptian Pyramids, and the temples of Mesopotamia.
The T-shaped monoliths, decorated with carvings of animals and human figures, stand as evidence of a complex social and spiritual world.
That hunter-gatherers built such a sanctuary challenges everything we thought we knew about organization, belief, and art.
In 2018, Göbeklitepe was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Viofun’s Recommendation
Visit Göbeklitepe at sunrise, when the long shadows of the stones bring the silence of the past to life.
Before your visit, explore the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum to see original artifacts from the excavations — it will make your experience even more meaningful.
