Sedir Island Archaeological Site (Muğla)
Sedir Island Archaeological Site (Muğla)

Every grain of sand you step on might carry the memory of a legend…
Located in the Gökova Gulf within the Ula district of Muğla, Sedir Island is world-famous for the legend of Cleopatra Beach.
The island is not only known for its natural beauty but also for its archaeological richness, including the remains of an ancient theater, agora, and temples.
Surrounded by golden limestone sands and turquoise waters, the island captivates both history lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.
In antiquity, Sedir Island was known as Cedrae, an important harbor city of the Rhodian Peraia.
The remains of the theater, agora, city walls, and temples reveal that the island was an active settlement during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
According to legend, Cleopatra swam here with Marcus Antonius, and the sand was brought from Egypt especially for her.
Scientific research, however, has confirmed that this sand is a rare natural formation unique to this area.
Viofun’s Recommendation
Walking barefoot on the special sands of the beach is not allowed,
but simply standing on the viewing terrace and gazing at the golden beach and turquoise sea is an experience in itself.
Plan your visit for early in the morning to explore the island’s ancient ruins in a peaceful atmosphere, away from the crowds.
