Selime Cathedral: A Majestic Heritage Carved into Rock
Introduction
One of the most impressive structures in Aksaray, Selime Cathedral is not just a place of worship, but a fascinating site where history and nature intertwine. Known as the largest cathedral in Cappadocia, it captivates visitors with its grand rock-carved details and spacious interior. At Viofun, we recommend this destination because it offers both historical depth and breathtaking views.
General Information
Selime Cathedral is a monastic complex carved into the rocks by the Byzantines in the 8th and 9th centuries. With its towering columns, large halls, and traces of frescoes, it provides significant insight into the religious and social life of its time. Due to its proximity to ancient trade routes, it also served as a stopover for merchants and military units. According to legend, the grandeur of this cathedral even inspired elements of Ottoman architecture, including the design of Topkapı Palace.

Viofun’s Recommendation
The best time to visit Selime Cathedral is during spring and autumn. Since summers can be hot, it’s more enjoyable to arrive in the early hours of the day. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes for the climb to the cathedral. You can also take a walk along the Melendiz Stream, right next to the site, and discover the natural beauty of the area.
