St. Jean Archaeological Site (Izmir)
St. Jean Archaeological Site (Izmir)

Once the heart of pilgrimage journeys… The St. John Archaeological Site is located on Ayasuluk Hill in the Selçuk district of İzmir and is believed to be the burial place of St. John, the author of the Gospel. The monumental basilica built on top of it is considered one of the most important architectural works of the Byzantine era. Today, the ruins of the basilica still stand, offering a fascinating atmosphere of religious, historical, and architectural significance.
Constructed in the 6th century AD by Emperor Justinian, this basilica became an important pilgrimage center in the early Christian world due to the sanctity of St. John’s tomb. The cruciform structure with six domes is notable for its mosaics, column capitals, baptismal font, and burial chamber. Located on Ayasuluk Hill, the site is surrounded by Selçuk Castle, the Isa Bey Mosque, and the Temple of Artemis, enriching its historical setting.
Viofun’s Suggestion
As you look over the Ephesus plain from the top of the basilica, imagine the thousands of pilgrims who once walked the same path. After your visit, you can explore Selçuk Castle and the Isa Bey Mosque nearby to fully experience this historic triangle.
