Terrace Houses of Ephesus (Izmir)
Terrace Houses of Ephesus (Izmir)
In the shadow of the marble streets, the wealthy of Ephesus once lived here… The Terrace Houses of Ephesus, nestled on the slopes of Bülbül Mountain within the ancient city (Selçuk, İzmir), form a complex of luxurious Roman villas. Accessible via glass platforms, this area vividly displays how the upper class of antiquity lived: mosaics, frescoes, private baths, heating systems, and two-story floor plans can still be seen.
Known to have been used between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD, the Terrace Houses belonged to the elite families of Ephesus. With underfloor-heated bath systems, inner courtyards, fountain pools, and marble pavements, they reflect the architectural and technological knowledge of the era. The mythological scenes and colorful frescoes on the walls are among the finest examples of Roman art in Anatolia. To protect them, the houses have been covered with a steel-and-glass construction and are presented to visitors through modern walkways.
Viofun’s Suggestion
As you walk across the glass platforms, keep your eyes on the details beneath your feet. A wall decoration or a floor pattern might tell the elegant life story of a family from thousands of years ago. Don’t skip this area during your Ephesus visit – it is the essence of ancient luxury.
