Virgin Mary Monastery
Virgin Mary Monastery

Carved into the rocks and neighboring the clouds, this monastery is a place of retreat where faith and nature intertwine.
Located in Kayadibi village of Şebinkarahisar district, Giresun, the Virgin Mary Monastery is an impressive religious structure hidden among steep cliffs.
With its entrance area, inner courtyard, sacred water spring (ayazma), and rooms reached by stone stairs, it offers both an architectural and spiritual discovery.
Dominated by silence and tranquility, it is also one of the most intriguing exploration routes in Giresun.
Although the exact construction date of the monastery is unknown, it is believed to date back to the Byzantine period.
Carved out of rock, the structure was expanded over time and used as a religious center.
In the 19th century, it became one of the pilgrimage sites for the Christian population that lived densely in the region.
The ayazma area is still considered sacred and is visited by the locals.
Viofun’s Recommendation
While walking on the path leading to the monastery, stop and listen to nature.
The only sounds breaking the silence are those of the wind and the water…
On your way back, visit Şebinkarahisar Castle to turn your day into a route full of both nature and history.
