Zelve Paşabağlar Archaeological Site, Nevşehir

In the land of three-headed fairy chimneys, the past still breathes…
The Zelve–Paşabağlar Archaeological Site, located in the Avanos district of Nevşehir, is one of Cappadocia’s most visually stunning open-air areas.
With its rock-carved dwellings, churches, pigeon houses, and valleys filled with fairy chimneys, it offers a perfect blend of natural and cultural heritage.
Especially Paşabağlar Valley, known for its three-headed fairy chimneys, is among the most photographed spots in Cappadocia.
The Zelve Valley served as a settlement and monastic center during the early Christian period.
Notable structures include the Üzümlü (Grapevine) Church, Balıklı (Fish) Church, and Direkli (Columned) Church.
People lived in Zelve until the 1950s, when erosion and rock collapse made the site unsafe.
The Paşabağlar area, also known as the “Monks Valley,” features some of the most symmetrical and impressive fairy chimney formations, believed to have once sheltered hermits.
Viofun’s Recommendation
Stand beneath the three-headed fairy chimneys of Paşabağlar and listen to the silence.
Each rock formation is a masterpiece of nature, shaped over thousands of years.
Follow the walking trails in Zelve and stay until sunset to truly feel the spirit of the valley.
